Okay so it is not gone into www.outer-space.com. This is when having a good Host with good customer service comes in handy. I use Bluehost (affiliate link) and I recommend them for their stellar customer care for newbies! So give your host a call and tell the tech support what happened. There will be two scenarios.
#1 – You can explain what happened, and they might go into your files and be able to tweak something and bring back your site to just before you made your mistake.
#2 – Worst case scenario is that they can bring back your blog from their last backup (usually the night before). But you will have lost anything you did since that backup.
Good Practices to Avoid Losing your DIY Blog Changes
If you are going to tinker with the back of your blog, here are some things you should be doing:
1. Always keep a backup of your Custom CSS sheet. This is the “Custom CSS” thing under Appearance that allows you to change things without messing with the set documents of your blog. It essentially will overwrite the commands for you, in order to changes something you don’t like. The custom CSS will stay in place when you update your theme. So always make your style changes to the Custom CSS sheet.
2. If you ever change anything else in your CSS, realize that it will get overridden any time you update your theme. So if you add to the Header.php or the Functions.php, make some notes in a Word doc so that you know what to paste and where when it gets overridden. Developers have better ways to do this, but I am not a developer, so I do it my way! I just make myself notes of what I did, and what and where I pasted it. Then, when my theme is updated, I go through and make all those changes again.
So, if you “break” your site…never fear. It is not gone and there are ways to get it back, as well as ways to prevent it!
